Check These First (Before Calling Anyone)
1. Thermostat Set Incorrectly
It sounds obvious, but it's the most common call we get. Check that: (1) the thermostat is set to "COOL" not "HEAT" or "FAN ONLY," (2) the temperature setpoint is below the current room temperature, and (3) if you have a "FAN" setting, it's set to "AUTO" not "ON" — the "ON" setting runs the fan continuously even when the system isn't cooling, which blows unconditioned air through the vents.
2. Clogged Air Filter
A severely restricted filter can cause the evaporator coil to freeze. When the coil freezes, airflow nearly stops — and what little air does come out feels warm because it's not passing over the cold coil properly. Pull your filter out and hold it up to a light. If you can't see light through it, replace it immediately. Turn the system off and let it thaw for 2–3 hours before restarting. This is the #1 preventable cause of AC failure in summer.
3. Tripped Circuit Breaker
Your AC system has two circuit breakers — one for the indoor air handler and one for the outdoor compressor. If only the outdoor breaker trips, the indoor blower keeps running but there's no cooling happening. Check your breaker panel. If a breaker has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again immediately, do not keep resetting it — call a technician. A repeatedly tripping breaker indicates an electrical fault that needs diagnosis.
Causes That Require a Technician
4. Low Refrigerant (Refrigerant Leak)
Refrigerant is the fluid that absorbs heat from your home and releases it outside. If the system has a leak, refrigerant level drops and the system loses its ability to cool effectively. Signs include: warm air from vents, ice forming on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil, a hissing or bubbling sound near the unit, and higher-than-normal electric bills. Adding refrigerant without finding and repairing the leak is a band-aid — the leak must be located and repaired. Only EPA-certified technicians can legally handle refrigerants.
5. Dirty Condenser Coil
The outdoor unit's condenser coil releases heat from your home into the outside air. In Fresno's dusty environment, this coil can become coated with dirt, cottonwood seeds, and debris. A severely dirty condenser coil can't release heat efficiently — the system keeps circulating warm air because it can't complete the heat transfer process. You can gently rinse the outdoor unit with a garden hose from the inside out, but a thorough coil cleaning with appropriate cleaners should be done by a technician during an annual tune-up.
6. Failed Compressor or Capacitor
The compressor is what actually pumps refrigerant through the system. If it fails or if the capacitor that starts the compressor fails, the outdoor unit may run (fan spinning) but no compression is happening — which means no cooling. A failed capacitor is one of the most common repairs in Fresno's heat and is relatively inexpensive ($150–$350). A failed compressor is far more serious and expensive ($1,500–$3,000+). A technician will diagnose which component is the issue.
Quick diagnostic tip: Go outside and look at your outdoor unit while the AC is running. You should see the large fan on top spinning, and you should feel warm air blowing out. If the fan is spinning but the air isn't warm (or the unit isn't running at all), the compressor likely isn't operating — call a technician.
Don't do this: Don't pour water on a frozen indoor coil to speed up thawing, don't attempt to add refrigerant yourself (it's illegal and dangerous), and don't keep resetting a tripped breaker. These shortcuts create bigger problems.
When to Call for Same-Day Service
In Fresno's summer heat, a non-cooling AC is a health and safety issue — not just a comfort problem. Temperatures inside a home without AC can reach dangerous levels within hours when it's 108°F outside. If you've checked the thermostat, filter, and breaker and the system still isn't cooling, call for same-day service.
Central Elite guarantees same-day or next-day AC repair service throughout Fresno and the Central Valley. Call (559) 254-4680 — we dispatch immediately.
