How Each System Works

Central Air Conditioning

A central AC system uses one outdoor condensing unit and one indoor air handler connected to your home's ductwork. Cooled air is distributed through ducts and vents to every room simultaneously. The thermostat controls the whole-home temperature from a single point. Central AC is the dominant system in Fresno homes built after 1970 — most already have the ducts in place.

Ductless Mini-Split

A mini-split system has the same type of outdoor compressor unit, but instead of ducts, it connects via refrigerant lines to individual indoor air handlers mounted in each room or zone. Each indoor unit has its own remote control and can be set to different temperatures independently. Multi-zone systems can have 2–5 indoor units connected to a single outdoor unit.

When Central AC Is the Better Choice

Central AC wins in these situations:

  • Your home already has ductwork in good condition. Replacing an existing central AC system is straightforward and cost-effective — you're only replacing the equipment, not installing new infrastructure.
  • You want invisible equipment. Many homeowners prefer not to have wall-mounted units in their living spaces. Central AC keeps all the equipment hidden in utility spaces.
  • Whole-home simultaneous cooling is the priority. If everyone in your home wants the same temperature at the same time, central AC is simpler to operate.
  • Budget is the primary concern. For a home with existing ducts, central AC installation costs less than a full multi-zone mini-split system.

When a Mini-Split Is the Better Choice

Mini-splits make more sense when:

  • Your home has no existing ductwork (older Fresno homes, additions, converted garages). Running new ducts is expensive — often $5,000–$10,000 — and mini-splits eliminate that cost entirely.
  • You're adding an addition or accessory dwelling unit (ADU). Extending existing ductwork to a new space is often impractical; a mini-split serves the new space independently.
  • Different family members want different temperatures. Zone control is a significant comfort upgrade — bedrooms cooler at night, living areas cooled during the day.
  • Efficiency is a top priority. High-end mini-splits reach 25–30 SEER2, which is significantly more efficient than even the best central AC systems. In Fresno's long cooling season, that efficiency pays off.
  • You want year-round heating and cooling from one system. Mini-splits are heat pumps — they provide efficient heat in winter without a separate furnace.

Important for Fresno: Not all mini-splits perform well in extreme heat. Systems must be rated for high ambient temperatures (115°F+) to perform reliably during our hottest summer weeks. We only install brands with verified high-temperature performance ratings. Ask your contractor specifically about ambient temperature limits before purchasing.

The Hybrid Approach

Many Fresno homeowners use both: central AC for the main living areas (leveraging existing ducts) and a single-zone mini-split for a garage, sunroom, home office, or master bedroom that the central system struggles to cool effectively. This hybrid approach often delivers the best of both worlds at a lower total cost than replacing a full central system with multi-zone mini-splits.

Our Recommendation

If your home has existing ductwork in good condition and your current central AC needs replacement, a new high-efficiency central AC system is almost always the most cost-effective choice. If you're adding space, dealing with a home that was never designed for central air, or prioritizing zoning and maximum efficiency, a mini-split system delivers real advantages that justify the higher upfront cost.
